How Arena works
Arena combines the wind and wave forecast with each cove's shelter by direction and with the history of boats counted by satellite, to tell you where to anchor and how busy it will be.
Shelter by direction
Each cove is measured along 36 directions: in each one, the stretch of open water to the coast (the fetch, on the OpenStreetMap coastline). With the hourly forecast of wind, wind sea and swell, Arena works out a shelter score from 0 to 100 and shows it as “Well sheltered”, “Acceptable” or “Exposed”.
Expected crowding
Copernicus' Sentinel-1 (radar) and Sentinel-2 (optical) satellites pass over the Pityusic Islands several times a week. Arena has counted the boats anchored in each cove since 2017 and, with each day's weather, a model estimates how busy it will be. It is an estimate, not a live count.
Verified content
Cove summaries, places and their highlights are published only when at least two reliable sources, checked by hand, confirm them. Opening hours appear only when confirmed. Being listed is free and on merit: no place pays.
